Incense Finder

When you’ll light it, what it’s for, which kind you like and how much smoke is OK: four taps, then two or three picks.

1. When will you light it?
2. What is it for?
3. Which kind do you like?
4. How much smoke is OK?

Choosing incense: scent, moment and smoke

Pick incense by the moment first, then the scent. Fresh, citrusy scents like lemongrass suit mornings; warm woods like sandalwood suit work and puja; soft, earthy scents like lavender and patchouli suit evenings. For puja and evening dhupa, havan cups or resin give the fuller, traditional smoke; for small rooms and long sessions, a thin charcoal-free stick is gentler.

Sticks, cups or resin?

  • Sticks: the easiest; a thin line of smoke and a long, steady scent. Ours are charcoal-free and bamboo-free and burn about 35 minutes.
  • Havan cups: a small cup of resin and herbs that lights directly and burns about 20 minutes. Havan-style fragrance without a havan kund or charcoal.
  • Resin in a dhuni: the traditional dhupa. Loban or frankincense on an ember, carried room to room. The most aromatic and the most smoke.

Getting the most from your incense

  1. One at a time. One stick or cup scents most rooms.
  2. Air it. Keep a window open, especially for cups and resin.
  3. Use a holder with a dish. It catches the ash and keeps the surface safe.
  4. Store it dry. Keep packs closed and away from damp so they light easily.
  5. Make it a ritual. Same time, same place: the habit is what makes it calming.
