How to brew
  1. The slow drip. Add 2–3 tbsp of medium-coarse coffee and chicory to the upper chamber, rest the pressing disc on top, fill with just-boiled water and close the lid. Decoction collects below in 10–15 minutes.
  2. The golden union. Pour 30–40 ml of decoction into the tumbler, then add hot milk and sugar or jaggery to taste.
  3. The degree pour. Pour between tumbler and dabara in a high arc to froth the milk and cool the coffee.
  4. The slower sip. Sip from the tumbler or the dabara. The brass keeps it warm to the last drop.
Care

Wash by hand with a mild soap and a soft sponge, then dry straight away with a cotton cloth to avoid water spots. Skip the dishwasher and steel scrubbers.

Brass slowly warms to a soft patina with use. To bring back the golden shine, rub gently with lemon and salt, tamarind or Pitambari, then rinse and dry.

Have a Question?

What's included in this set?

A complete 3-piece filter kaapi set: 1 brass coffee filter (lid, pressing disc, upper brewing chamber and lower decoction chamber), 1 tumbler of 150 ml and 1 dabara of 200 ml.

What are the sizes?

Coffee filter: about 17 cm tall with the lid, 7 cm across the top and 6.3 cm at the base. Tumbler: 150 ml, 7 cm tall, 7.4 cm top, 4.5 cm base. Dabara: 200 ml, 4 cm tall, 10 cm top, 7.8 cm base.

How do I brew decoction in the brass filter?

Add 2–3 tablespoons of medium-coarse coffee and chicory to the upper chamber and rest the pressing disc on top without pressing hard. Fill with just-boiled water and close the lid. In 10–15 minutes, thick decoction collects in the lower chamber.

Why is filter coffee served in a tumbler and dabara?

Pouring between the two in a high arc froths the milk, dissolves the sugar evenly and cools the coffee to a comfortable sip, with a soft golden foam on top.

Is the brass safe for coffee?

Yes. It's solid, food-grade brass with no lacquer or plating on any surface that touches your coffee.

How do I clean it and bring back the shine?

Wash by hand with a mild soap and a soft sponge, then dry straight away with a cotton cloth. To restore the golden shine, rub gently with lemon and salt, tamarind or Pitambari, then rinse and dry. Please skip the dishwasher.

Is it a good gift?

Yes. It's a complete brew-to-sip set, which makes it a thoughtful gift for a housewarming, a wedding, Diwali or Dhanteras, or anyone who loves South Indian filter coffee.
