How to Clean Brass Utensils at Home
The quickest way: rub the brass with half a lemon dipped in salt, rinse with water and dry straight away with a cotton cloth. For heavy black tarnish, use tamarind pulp or a paste of flour, salt and vinegar left on for 10–15 minutes. For green spots, use a baking soda paste. Whatever you use, rinse off all the acid and dry the brass fully, because water left to dry is what dulls it again.
5 home methods compared
| Method | Best for | Time | You need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon + salt | Everyday dullness, light tarnish | 2 minutes | Half a lemon, 1 tsp salt |
| Tamarind (imli) pulp | Dark tarnish on thalis, diyas, lotas | 5–10 minutes | A lump of tamarind soaked in warm water |
| Flour + salt + vinegar paste | Heavy black tarnish, big pieces | 15 minutes | Equal parts maida and salt, vinegar to make a paste |
| Baking soda + lemon | Green or blue spots, grooves | 10 minutes | 1 tbsp baking soda, lemon juice, soft toothbrush |
| Ketchup or tomato | Quick polish on decor (not utensils) | 10 minutes | A thin layer, then wash off well |
All methods: test on a hidden spot first, rinse thoroughly, dry immediately.
Lemon and salt, step by step
- Wash. Wash the utensil with mild dish soap and warm water to remove oil and food.
- Rub. Dip a cut lemon in salt and rub in small circles. The tarnish lifts in seconds.
- Work the details. Use an old toothbrush with the lemon-salt mix on handles, rims and engraving.
- Rinse well. Rinse with plain water until no lemon is left; leftover acid makes brass tarnish faster.
- Dry and buff. Dry immediately with a cotton cloth and buff for shine.
Heavy tarnish: the tamarind or flour paste method
Old brass that’s gone almost black needs contact time. Soak a lump of tamarind in warm water for 10 minutes, squeeze it into a pulp and spread it over the brass. Leave it 5–10 minutes, then rub with the tamarind fibres and rinse. For big pieces like a large thali or urli, mix equal parts flour (maida) and salt with enough white vinegar to make a toothpaste-thick paste. Spread it on, leave 15 minutes, rub, then wash it off fully.
Don’t leave either paste on for hours: acid that sits too long can etch the surface and leave pink patches where zinc has been pulled out.
Green spots on brass
Green or blue-green spots (verdigris) form where moisture sits: under a lid, inside a groove, in a utensil put away damp. Mix baking soda with a little lemon juice into a thick paste, let the fizzing stop, and press it onto the spots. After 10 minutes, scrub with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry fully. Then fix the cause: always dry brass before storing it.
Brass cookware after cooking
For brass kadhai, patila or handi used for cooking, wash soon after use with warm soapy water. For burnt-on food, soak 20–30 minutes in warm soapy water, then scrub with baking soda on a non-scratch scrubber. Avoid steel wool, which leaves scratches that tarnish faster. If your brass pot is tin-lined inside (kalai), clean the lining gently with soap only; acids and scrubbing wear the tin away.
Lacquered brass (glossy, never tarnishes, often decor) must never get lemon, tamarind, vinegar or polish. They strip the coating unevenly. Use only mild soap and a soft cloth.
Keep brass shining longer
- Dry every piece by hand straight after washing.
- Store in a dry cupboard, away from the sink and stove.
- Use brass regularly. Pieces in daily use tarnish less than ones locked away.
- A quick lemon rub every week or two beats a big scrub every few months.
- For pieces you rarely use, wrap in a dry cotton cloth.

Frequently asked questions
How do I clean brass utensils at home quickly?
Rub with half a lemon dipped in salt, rinse well and dry straight away with a cotton cloth. It takes about two minutes.
How do I remove black tarnish from brass?
Use soaked tamarind pulp or a flour-salt-vinegar paste for 10–15 minutes, then rub, rinse and dry.
Can I wash brass utensils in a dishwasher?
No. Dishwasher detergent and heat discolour brass and leave it dull and patchy.
Which powder is best for cleaning brass?
You don’t need one: lemon, salt, tamarind and baking soda work. If you use a brass cleaning powder on utensils, rinse very thoroughly.
Why does brass turn pink after cleaning?
Acid left on too long can pull zinc from the surface and leave pink patches. Use shorter contact times and rinse well. Gentle polishing evens it out over time.
