Agarbatti vs Dhoop: What’s the Difference?

Agarbatti has a thin bamboo stick inside, coated with incense paste; dhoop is solid incense with no stick, shaped into a thick stick, cone or cup. Dhoop usually smells stronger and smokier and is traditional for aarti and evening puja; agarbatti is lighter and burns longer, so it’s the everyday choice. Bamboo-free sticks sit in between: dhoop-style, but thin like an agarbatti.

Dhoop sticks vs dhoop cones

Both are dhoop. Cones burn faster and give a burst of fragrance, good for a short aarti. Dhoop sticks are thicker or longer and burn more steadily. Some cones are “backflow”: smoke flows downward through a hole, which looks lovely on a special burner, but they make more smoke per minute, so ventilate well.

Where bamboo-free sticks fit

A bamboo-free stick is made like dhoop (solid, no core) but rolled thin like an agarbatti. You get the even scent of dhoop with the gentler smoke and longer burn of a stick, and no burnt bamboo smell at the end. Our charcoal-free sticks are made this way and burn about 35 minutes each.

Which to use when

  1. Morning puja. An agarbatti or a bamboo-free stick: light, steady fragrance.
  2. Evening aarti. Dhoop cone or sambrani for the traditional stronger smoke.
  3. Meditation or yoga. One thin stick; you want scent, not smoke.
  4. Clearing a room after cooking. Dhoop or a havan cup, with windows open.
  5. Small flat or bedroom. A single thin stick, burned briefly.

Frequently asked questions

Is dhoop better than agarbatti?

Neither is better: dhoop is stronger and smokier, agarbatti is lighter and lasts longer. Choose by the moment and the room size.

Is dhoop the same as incense?

Yes, dhoop is a kind of incense: solid incense without a bamboo core.

Which makes less smoke, agarbatti or dhoop?

Usually agarbatti, because it is thinner. Dhoop cones and backflow cones make the most smoke.

Can I use dhoop daily?

Yes, briefly and with a window open. For long sessions a thin stick is gentler.
