How to Burn Loban Without Charcoal: 5 Ways
The easiest way is to use loban that lights on its own: havan or sambrani cups and loban dhoop sticks. For raw loban crystals, use a heated burner (electric or tea-light) so the resin melts and releases its smoke without an open ember. Traditional homes also use a glowing piece of dried cow-dung cake. Whichever you choose, use a small amount and keep a window open.
Five ways, easiest first
- 1. Havan or sambrani cups. Light the rim, let it catch, blow it out to a glow. It burns about 20 minutes and needs no charcoal. Stand it on a ceramic holder.
- 2. Loban dhoop sticks or cones. Loban mixed into dhoop paste. Light the tip like an agarbatti.
- 3. A heated burner. An electric resin burner or a tea-light burner with a metal plate. Put a small crystal on the plate; it melts and smokes gently.
- 4. A diya-heated spoon. Hold a small brass spoon with a crystal above a diya flame for a minute. Short, and only with a steady hand; mind your fingers.
- 5. Dried cow-dung cake (uple). Light a small piece in a dhuni until it glows, then add loban. Traditional and still smoky, so ventilate well.
Why people skip charcoal discs
Quick-light charcoal discs are convenient but give off more smoke and gases of their own, including carbon monoxide, which you don’t want building up in a closed room. If you do use charcoal (our Sthira gift set includes charcoal discs for resin, the traditional way), always burn it in a well-ventilated space on a heat-safe surface, and never in a closed bedroom.
Which method for which home
| Method | Smoke | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Havan / sambrani cups | Moderate | Lowest | Daily evening dhoop, flats |
| Loban dhoop sticks | Low–moderate | Low | Quick fragrance |
| Heated burner | Low | Low | Raw crystals, gentle scent |
| Diya-heated spoon | Low | Fiddly | Just a whiff for puja |
| Cow-dung cake | High | Medium | Traditional dhuni, open spaces |
Safety: resin and burners get very hot. Use a dhuni or burner with a handle, keep it on a heat-safe surface, away from curtains, children and pets, and never leave it burning unattended.

Frequently asked questions
Can loban burn on its own?
Raw loban crystals don’t stay lit by themselves; they need heat. Loban cups and dhoop sticks are made to burn on their own.
How do I burn loban on a gas stove?
Don’t put resin straight on a burner. Use a small steel or brass spoon or plate heated on a low flame, then move it to a dhuni.
How much loban should I use?
A pea-sized piece is plenty for a room. Add more only if you want stronger fragrance.
Are havan cups the same as loban?
Many havan and sambrani cups contain benzoin (loban) with herbs. Check the ingredients; our Kashi cups are oud and sambrani.
